Ozempic - What It Is, How It Works, and Who It’s For

Ozempic - What It Is, How It Works, and Who It’s For

The “Ozempic phenomenon” has captured widespread attention. Celebrity endorsements and viral TikTok transformations continue to fuel the idea that this diabetes medication is a rapid slimming solution. The hashtag #OzempicWeightLoss has drawn hundreds of millions of views, and discussions about which stars are using it dominate entertainment headlines.

In recent years, the popularity of semaglutide-based medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy and tirzepatide (sold as Mounjaro) has skyrocketed around the world, leading to shortages, off-label prescribing, and even a black market. In Australia, Ozempic is only approved for the management of type 2 diabetes,.

At the beginning of the hype in 2023, demand surged so dramatically that it caused nationwide shortages, leaving many people with type 2 diabetes struggling to access their essential treatment. While supply has become more stable, demand remains strong and discussions about whether weight-loss medications should be subsidised on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) are gaining momentum. At the same time, lawsuits have begun mounting in the U.S., with thousands of patients claiming serious side effects such as gastroparesis were not adequately disclosed by manufacturers.

Against this backdrop, it is important to step back from the headlines and examine what Ozempic actually does, who it is for, and why HIF recommends speaking to your GP or specialist before starting any prescription treatment.

Postpartum Pelvic Floor Physio - How It Helps New Mums Recover Safely

Postpartum Pelvic Floor Physio - How It Helps New Mums Recover Safely

Bringing a new baby into the world is an incredible milestone, but it also places unique physical demands on your body. For many women, pregnancy and childbirth affect not only energy levels and sleep but also pelvic floor and core function. According to The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), supervised pelvic floor muscle training with a pelvic health physiotherapist can significantly reduce urinary leakage, improve prolapse symptoms, and support a safe return to exercise after birth.

Beyond the physical changes, many new mothers also experience a shift in confidence and body awareness. Activities that once felt effortless, from lifting a pram to playing sport, can suddenly feel challenging or uncomfortable. Left unaddressed, pelvic floor issues can affect daily life, limit participation in exercise, and even contribute to feelings of isolation. Addressing these changes early with the guidance of a women’s health physiotherapist not only supports physical recovery but can also restore confidence and independence.

In this article, we’ll explore why pelvic floor physio matters after childbirth, what to expect from treatment, when to seek help, how to return to movement safely, and how HIF cover can help make the journey easier.

Prioritising Sleep Health - Your Foundation for Better Living

Prioritising Sleep Health - Your Foundation for Better Living

In today's demanding environment, sleep is frequently the first sacrifice when schedules become overwhelming. However, mounting scientific evidence demonstrates that quality sleep represents far more than a restorative break: it constitutes a fundamental biological requirement for optimal health and performance.

At HIF, we position sleep health as one of three essential pillars of wellbeing, equally important to balanced nutrition and regular physical activity. This recognition stems from extensive research showing that adequate sleep underpins virtually every aspect of human health, from cognitive function to immune resilience.

Understanding Pancreatic Cancer - Signs, Symptoms and When to Act

Understanding Pancreatic Cancer - Signs, Symptoms and When to Act

Pancreatic cancer is a particularly aggressive form of cancer that presents unique challenges for both patients and healthcare providers. It is often detected late due to subtle or vague early symptoms, making it one of the most difficult cancers to diagnose in its early stages. Despite being relatively uncommon, according to Cancer Council Australia affecting approximately 4,641 Australians in 2024, pancreatic cancer has a disproportionately high mortality rate, with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners ranking it as the fourth leading cause of cancer death in Australia.

Raising awareness about this disease is crucial, as early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes and quality of life. According to Pankind - Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer in Australia has improved to 13% for diagnoses made between 2015-2019, demonstrating the importance of continued research and awareness efforts.

At HIF, we understand that a cancer diagnosis can be a stressful time for you and your loved ones. That's why we offer tailored programs to support you through every stage of your cancer treatment. Our comprehensive approach addresses not only the physical aspects through hospital cover, but also the emotional challenges through mental health services and practical support through our health and wellbeing programs. We're committed to supporting members across the entire cancer journey, recognising that cancer care extends far beyond medical treatment to encompass the whole person and their support network.

HIF Australia

Have you ever heard of the term “self-insurance”? It’s being referred to as an alternative to the traditional process of taking out a health insurance policy as a safety net. But can you really afford to self-insure and is it the safest option? According to finance and insurance expert, Bessie Hassan from finder.com.au, “The answer is probably not. You never really know when a medical issue can pop up and how much it’s going to cost you, the reality is that not everyone can afford to fork out $35,000 when the time comes.” With this in mind, Bessie  discusses the importance of having health insurance and being covered if the worst happened.
