If you’re looking to get more value from your Extras cover, understanding how your limits work is a great place to start.

At HIF, annual limits always reset on 1 Jan, regardless of how much you claimed the year before – so don’t let them go to waste!

Here’s some helpful information about how your Extras limits work.

What are Extras limits?

They’re the maximum dollar amount you can claim for treatments and services included on your Extras cover. There are different types of Extras limits, including:

  • Annual limits: The maximum amount of benefits payable in a calendar year, starting 1 January and ending 31 December.

  • Combined limits: The maximum amount you can claim across a set group of Extras services, allowing you to claim more back from the services you actually need, instead of having unused benefits tied to a service you won’t use.

  • Sub-limits: The maximum amount you can claim for a specific treatment within a wider set of limits. These sub-limits only apply to some treatments, and help ensure a single claim doesn't exhaust the entire limit available for the relevant Extras service.

  • Person limits: For some services, each person on an HIF membership will have their own individual limit. This helps ensure multiple people can claim benefits from their shared policy - no worries about one person claiming the entire limit!

  • Lifetime limits: The maximum amount you can claim for orthodontic treatment, throughout your lifetime. This limit doesn’t reset – even if you transfer to a new health fund, your Orthodontic Lifetime Limit usage will typically transfer with you.

When do Extras limits reset?

At HIF, annual Extras limits reset on 1 January every year. No matter how much you claimed the previous year (even if it was on 31 December!), you’ll always get that top-up on 1 January.

How can limits help you get more value from your Extras cover?

Limits can help you assess which level of cover is right for you, or review your cover if your needs change. You can check how much you’re able to claim for each service and compare this against the amount you think you’ll actually use. Compare HIF Extras to learn more about the services and benefit limits included on every level of cover.

How do I check my Extras limits?

You can check your cover details 24/7 via the Online Member Centre or HIF app. You’ll be able to see your Extras limits, including your claim history and your remaining annual limits.
