Not all dogs suit all lifestyles and if we don’t get it right it can cause issues for both the human and our furry family members. For the elderly looking for a new dog a puppy is definitely not recommended, a middle aged to older dog that is low maintenance and low energy and not so small that they get under foot is recommended, making a rescue dog that fits this build a great choice.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel like Beau here was bred to be primarily a lap dog and a companion animal and is very happy to play this role. As is the fun loving but rather lazy Pug, the Basset Hound or the English Bulldog.
When it comes to families with children, breeds that are known to be patient, resilient and friendly are important such as the Basset Hound, the Beagle and again the Cavalier. The gentle giants the Bernese Mountain Dog, Newfoundland, the Golden and Labrador Retriever and the Irish Wolf Hound are friendly and loyal and make wonderful family pets; but in small spaces or around toddlers their size large size could pose a bit of a problem. Mastiffs despite their size and look are also very gentle with children and are also very protective of the family they love.
The popular Cavoodles, Spoodles, Labradoodles and Groodles also make for great family pets. Though their size can vary greatly depending on how big or small the poodle parent may have been, so don’t get caught out there. I’ve seen many a cute Groodle puppy quickly become a massive bouncing ball of fluff, that continuously knocks a toddler or the elderly off their feet with its exuberant and energetic displays of love. Also coming with a bounce alert warning is the boxer who is both energetic and affectionate, and is known for its love of children.
Then there always the mutts, plenty of these love nothing more than a cuddle with the kids. As always it's important to remember that whilst a breed may have a general personality and disposition every dog is still an individual that requires good training and the right level of attention, exercise and care to help keep them and your family safe.
