Eye Health Myths Debunked

There are many myths surrounding healthy eyes. Most of them we were told as children, so we think of them as true but we’re here to give you the facts about eye health once and for all.

Myth 1:  Eyes Weaken due to Wearing Glasses

Fact: Some people put off getting their first pair of glasses believing their eyes will deteriorate quicker once they start wearing them however there is no evidence to suggest this is the case.

Myth 2: Carrots Good for Eyes

Fact: Sure carrots contain vitamin A which is good for our eyes but so do many other foods like egg yolk, cheese and milk. Eating a diet high in carrots (or any other single food) is not going to cut your risk of eye diseases and degeneration. Eat a balanced diet for good eye and general health.

Myth 3: Don’t Read in the Dark

Fact: Reading in the dark will not weaken your eyes however it may cause eye strain and headaches.

Myth 4: Don’t Sit too Close to the TV

Fact: Most adults were told to sit further back as kids. Today’s mega-sized TV screens mean kids don’t want to sit as close as their parents once did. Sitting close to a TV may signal the need for glasses but won’t damage your eyes.

Myth 5: My eyes are already failing, there’s nothing I can do about it

Fact: Sure we can’t stop the signs of ageing, but there are things you can do to prevent further damage or eyesight loss. When you first notice any blurred vision, light flashes, floating objects or you experience any eye pain, see your GP or eye specialist. They can determine the cause and may be able to slow down or correct your eye problem. Loss of vision usually occurs because people don’t seek treatment early enough.

Myth 6: Eye exams aren’t necessary if you can see fine

Fact: Having a regular eye exam will pick up any problems you may not be aware of. As adults, vision loss can be so gradual that we don’t realise it is occurring. For children they may think their poor eyesight is normal for everyone because they don’t know any different. Your eye specialist may pick up a problem that you weren’t aware of and can begin treatment early.

Myth 7: Sunglasses are just a fashion accessory

Fact: Sunlight can damage the retina at the back of your eyes. Exposure to the sun and its ultraviolet rays has a cumulative effect on your eyes. Prolonged UV exposure can cause macular degeneration and corneal dystrophies so it is important to wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes whenever you are outside in the sun for any length of time.
