Tips for a Stress-Free Visit to the Vet

Vet Visits

Dr. Claire Stevens

A visit to the vet can be a pretty stressful experience for many pets. We poke and prod, take blood and give injections. All this in an environment surrounded by unfamiliar smells, new people, and other animals. It’s no wonder that some cats and dogs aren’t too keen to come to the vet. But it doesn’t have to be that way!

Here are my top 7 tips for a stress-free visit to the vet.

Plan Ahead:

  • Avoid rushing to the appointment to reduce stress, as pets can pick up on your emotions.

  • Familiarise yourself with the route to the vet clinic, parking options and try to book an appointment during off peak hours. Many pets especially cats find travelling in the car very stressful.

Avoid Feeding Before the Visit:

  • Many pets are motivated by food, so consider withholding food before the visit. That way we can use treats and food motivation to help distract nervous pets during their examination and procedures.

Familiarise Your Cat with the Carrier:

  • Help your cat feel more comfortable by introducing them to the carrier before the visit.

  • Place the carrier in a familiar area with yummy treats inside, familiar objects like toys and a cosy blanket.

Ensure Pet's Comfort at the Clinic:

  • Vet waiting rooms can be overwhelming. Keep your pet secure and at ease by finding a seat away from the other animals, placing them at a higher level or on your lap.

  • Maintain eye contact with your pet and offer soothing words and treats to comfort your pet.

Introduce Your Dog to the Vet:

  • Taking your pet for a ‘getting to know you’ visit to the vet can create a positive association with the clinic.

  • Familiarise your pet with the clinic environment to alleviate stress during future visits.

Discuss Relaxation Options with Your Vet:

  • If your pet continues to find vet visits stressful, consult your vet about using synthetic pheromones or medications to help them relax.

Choose Your Vet Wisely:

  • Select a vet clinic that is a good fit for your pet's needs. Consider visiting the clinic beforehand to observe interactions and ensure you feel comfortable with the environment and service.

The less stressed your pet is, the better the chances of a smooth and positive experience at the vet clinic, so it’s important we do all we can to support them during their visit. Plus a stress free visit for them, means a stress free visit for you!
